CASPER, Aug. 19 – The Wyoming Medical Center is preparing for any problems arising from the so-called "millennium bug."

The hospital plans to spend about $1.25 million to update and test its electrical equipment for possible glitches when the year 2000 hits, said hospital spokesman Hal Halvorson.

Nationwide, computer experts are writing programs to counter any problems in computers that are set to read only the last two digits of a year, which could cause malfunctioning.

"I don’t think (patients) have to worry," he told the Memorial Hospital of Natrona County Board of Trustees recently. I think we’re going to be totally ready to support them."

The hospital plans to send letters to equipment manufacturers and sellers to find out whether their products will handle the conversion.

If the companies do not respond in a month, "I’m going to have to look at the impact of that equipment and makes plans to replace it" he said.
